Dear Editor
Whilst I can understand Anna Bligh’s feeling of humiliation and disappointment at the outcome of the recent election, I wonder what happened to the Queenslanders who are bred tough north of the border; who get knocked down, but then get up again?
Having offered herself to the electorate “for better or for worse”, the people of South Brisbane who supported her have a right to feel rejected by her resignation, before the declaration of the poll.
Given this feeling of rejection and the current mood within the state, it is very likely that her departure has handed Campbell Newman another seat.
Unfortunately there will be a cost to the public purse to conduct a by-election. The voters may be more favourably disposed to the Labor candidate if Anna funded the event out of her golden handshake.
As you have said, Mr Editor, there are no checks and balances in place and we are reliant on Mr Newman and the LNP exercising their power for the good of Queensland for probably the next decade.
