Dear Editor
In your editorial of Tuesday 27th March, you suggested Campbell Newman is a political virgin. He has impeccable credentials for the job.
Both his parents were in Federal politics, with his mother a minister. He presided over the Brisbane City Council for many years. The budget for this city council is larger than the state budget for Tasmania.
On the subject of upper houses, Tasmania, with a population less than the city of Brisbane, elects six Senators.
No wonder Paul Keating described the Federal Parliament’s upper house as “Unrepresentative Swill.”
I believe all the Australian states have democratically elected governments. Why pay for party hacks to occupy seats in upper houses for inordinately long terms? The money saved could be put to better use. One does wonder why Queensland is in such a parlous financial state.
